About

Castle Flats Cabin sits on the edge of the Castle River tide flat on Kupreanof Island, surrounded by old-growth forest and muskeg in the Tongass National Forest. This hunter-style cabin is a true backcountry experience, requiring either a 16-mile float plane flight or 30-mile boat ride from Petersburg. Tides dictate access: a 15-foot tide for float planes, 13-foot for boats, with a potential 2-mile hike across mud flats at lower water levels. The cabin sleeps up to five on four wooden bunks and is equipped with both an oil heater (requires #1 heating oil or kerosene) and a wood stove. A covered porch, table with benches, and basic tools including an axe and splitting maul are provided. A rowboat with oars is available for navigating the tide flats and nearby waterways, though guests must bring their own life jackets. The surrounding terrain hosts moose, black bears, deer, waterfowl, and grouse. Spring migrations bring diverse bird species to the flats. The Castle River Trail offers an easy 1-mile hike to the nearby Castle River Cabin and continues upstream through forest and muskeg. Fishing opportunities include steelhead (April-May), trout (May-October), and coho salmon (mid-August through mid-September).

Directions

From Petersburg, 16 air miles or 30 water miles. A 15-foot tide is required for float plane access, 13-foot tide for boat access. At lower tides, expect up to a 2-mile hike across the tide flat to reach the cabin. Located on the west side of Duncan Canal on Kupreanof Island.
