Saline Valley Primitive Campground offers one of Death Valley National Park's most remote camping experiences, centered around natural warm springs and soaking tubs. Located in the northwest corner of the park, this clothing-optional area is approximately 35 miles from the nearest paved road and accessible only via challenging backcountry routes. The campground sits at a relatively low elevation of 1,375 feet, but reaching it requires traversing either North Pass at 7,300 feet or South Pass at 5,997 feet, both of which may be impassable during winter due to snow. A high-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires is essential, and 4-wheel drive is frequently necessary depending on road and weather conditions. The route involves navigating rocky washes, deep sand, and steep mountain passes. Visitors should be self-sufficient and prepared for primitive conditions with limited facilities. RVs and trailers are not recommended due to the difficult access road. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. With 10-15 primitive sites, it attracts adventurous visitors seeking solitude and the unique experience of soaking in natural hot springs surrounded by dramatic desert landscapes. Death Valley entrance fees or an Annual/Lifetime Pass are required, but there is no additional camping fee.
