Saline Valley Primitive Campground is a remote backcountry destination centered around the Saline Valley Warm Springs in Death Valley National Park. The area is known for its clothing-optional hot spring soaking tubs, which draw visitors seeking a unique wilderness experience. Getting here requires serious preparation: the campground sits at 1,375 feet elevation but access requires crossing either North Pass at 7,300 feet or South Pass at 5,997 feet, both approximately 35 miles from paved roads. A high-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires is mandatory, and 4-wheel drive may be necessary depending on road and weather conditions. The only currently open route is from Big Pine, California via Saline Valley Road's North Pass. Winter conditions frequently make the passes impassable. RVs and trailers are not recommended, and vehicles over 25 feet are prohibited. This is a primitive campground with no services. Campers must bring all their own water and pack out all trash. Three vault toilet restrooms are available. The camping area is organized into three zones: car camping areas, walk-in camping with separate parking, and areas where camping is prohibited including within 100 feet of the source springs.

Directions

From Big Pine, CA, take Saline Valley Road south over North Pass (7,300 ft elevation). The campground is approximately 35 miles from the nearest paved road. High-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires required; 4WD may be necessary. South Pass access is currently closed due to flood damage.
