About

Portuguese Joe Campground is an Inyo County-managed campground situated along Tuttle Creek, approximately one mile from the town of Lone Pine. The campground features roughly 20 primitive campsites that line both sides of a small brook branching off of Lone Pine Creek. Sites 1-16 are reservable through ReserveAmerica, while the remaining sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet in length and serves as an accessible base camp for exploring the nearby Alabama Hills National Scenic Area, Mount Whitney, and the Eastern Sierra. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and lantern holder. The campground has a single water spigot serving all sites and vault toilets. Campfires are currently allowed in the designated fire rings. Visitors are within walking distance of Lone Pine and enjoy easy access to Movie Road, rock climbing, hiking, and the famous Alabama Hills rock formations. The campground offers a quieter, more intimate camping experience compared to larger nearby facilities. Fishing in the creek is available, though a California fishing license is required for those 16 years and older. Note that Whitney Portal Road is currently closed, requiring visitors to use an alternate route via Lubken Canyon Road to access the Alabama Hills.

Directions

From U.S. Highway 395 in Lone Pine, turn west onto Whitney Portal Road. Drive 1 mile to Tuttle Creek Road, then turn south to the campground entrance. Note: Whitney Portal Road is currently closed at the main intersection, requiring use of an alternate route via Lubken Canyon Road.
