About

Royal Oak Campground is a peaceful, tent-only campground located within Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County, Virginia. The campground features 11 platform tent sites and one yurt, each designed to accommodate camping equipment on a 20 by 20-foot pad. Unlike the park's other campgrounds, Royal Oak offers no electric, water, or sewer hookups, providing a more primitive camping experience in a quiet, wooded setting. The campground includes a bathhouse for camper convenience. Each site is equipped with a round fire ring suitable for cooking and campfires, and a picnic table. Firewood is available for purchase at the park. The Royal Oak yurt offers a unique glamping option, sleeping up to three guests on a queen bed and twin trundle, with a large wooden deck, picnic table, and fire ring. Note that the yurt has no on-site water or electricity. Campers at Royal Oak enjoy easy access to Hungry Mother State Park's extensive trail system, with more than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails open year-round. Popular routes include the trail to Molly's Knob, the park's highest point at 3,270 feet elevation, which offers scenic vistas. The park's 108-acre lake provides excellent fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and musky, plus a sandy beach, boat rentals, and a universally accessible fishing pier. The park was one of six original Virginia State Parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in 1936.
