About
Hungry Mother State Park, one of Virginia's original six state parks established in 1936, offers three recreational yurts that provide a unique camping experience. Two yurts are located in Camp Burson campground and one in Royal Oak campground. Each yurt accommodates up to four people and sleeps three with one queen-sized bed and a twin-sized trundle pull-out. The spacious yurts include a sofa, chair, coffee table, and dining table on a large wooden deck with a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grate. The yurts have no interior electricity, water, or lighting, though the Camp Burson yurts have an electrical pedestal and water hydrant nearby. Guests use the campground bathhouse located a short walk from the sites. This setup offers campers a middle ground between tent camping and cabin stays, with weather protection and basic furnishings while maintaining an outdoor camping atmosphere. The park itself features a beautiful 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains, with a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, fishing pier, over 17 miles of hiking trails, and interpretive programs. The park's Civilian Conservation Corps heritage is evident in the historic structures throughout the property.
