Round Valley Regional Preserve

Open

Open for the season April through October. The campsite is closed November through March. As of May 2026, the water supply at the backpack camp is not working; campers must bring all water needed for their trip.

About

Round Valley Regional Preserve spans over 2,100 acres of rolling grasslands, blue oak woodlands, and riparian habitat in eastern Contra Costa County near Brentwood. The preserve is home to the endangered San Joaquin kit fox, which is why dogs are strictly prohibited at all times. The landscape offers a remote, quiet escape from the Bay Area with views of Mount Diablo and the surrounding valleys. The backpack camp is situated approximately 3.6 miles from the Marsh Creek Staging Area, making it a moderate hike suitable for most backpackers. The group site accommodates 1 to 25 people and includes graded tent pads, picnic tables, an ADA-accessible vault toilet, and hitching rails for those arriving on horseback. There is normally non-potable water available that requires treatment, but campers should bring all water needed as the supply can be unreliable. Reservations are required at least 2 business days in advance through ReserveAmerica or the East Bay Regional Park District. Campfires and BBQs are not permitted at backpack sites; only backpack stoves may be used for cooking. Alcoholic beverages are also prohibited.

Directions

From Highway 4 in Brentwood, take Marsh Creek Road south. The Marsh Creek Staging Area is located on Marsh Creek Road. The backpack camp is a 3.6-mile hike from the staging area.
