About
Morgan Territory Regional Preserve offers a secluded backpack camping experience in 5,323 acres of oak-studded sandstone hills in Contra Costa County. The Morgan Territory Backpack Camp, constructed in 2001 at the former Cardoza homesite, is located approximately 4.5 miles from the staging area along the Highland Ridge Trail, a section of the Diablo Trail. This single-site camp accommodates 1-20 people and sits in an attractive glen partly shaded by a large oak tree with views of Mount Diablo to the west. The preserve is named for Jeremiah Morgan, who established a ranch here in 1857. The land lies within the traditional homeland of the Volvon, a Bay Miwuk-speaking people. Today, visitors can explore trails named for the First People of Native American folklore, including Coyote, Fox, and Eagle trails. The preserve's sandstone hills burst with color in spring, hosting more than 90 species of wildflowers including the Diablo sunflower, which grows only in the Mount Diablo foothills. From the ridgetops, hikers enjoy sweeping views of Mount St. Helena to the north and the snow-covered Sierra Nevada to the east, while lowland valleys cradle the headwaters of Marsh Creek. Wildlife includes deer, coyote, mountain lions, and a variety of soaring raptors. The preserve offers opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and backcountry camping in a landscape that blends natural beauty with rich cultural history.
