About

Round Valley Recreation Area is New Jersey's premier wilderness camping destination, featuring 60 primitive campsites along the southeastern shore of a deep, 2,350-acre reservoir. Unlike typical campgrounds, there is no vehicle access to the camping area. Campers must either hike 3-6 miles on the steep and rugged Cushetunk Trail or arrive by boat, making this a true backcountry experience recommended for experienced backpackers and boaters. The campground offers 52 family sites accommodating up to 6 people and 8 group sites for up to 25 people. Forty-two of the sites are waterfront and require boat access. Primitive pit toilets are available, and water spigots are located near sites 7 and 50, though campers in the middle section face up to a 3-mile round-trip walk for water. As wilderness sites, fire pits and picnic tables may not be included at every site. Pets are welcome at all sites for an additional fee. The reservoir is known for excellent fishing, including trophy lake trout, and offers swimming at the lifeguarded beach from mid-June through Labor Day. The park provides a rare opportunity for remote camping within an hour's drive of major metropolitan areas.
