Rough Canyon Campground

Open

Open year-round, first-come first-served. County-wide burn ban in effect until July 8, 2026, prohibiting all fires including charcoal. Ground fires are always prohibited; only BBQ grills may be used when no burn ban is active. Only the left side of the Rough Canyon boat ramp is open due to low water levels.

County-wide Burn Ban in Effect until July 8

In keeping with the county-wide burn ban enacted on January 15 and extended on April 9, fires--including charcoal fires--are not permitted within Amistad National Recreation Area. To read the Val Verde County Commissioners Court Order, click "More".

Diablo East Marina Cove, Scuba Cove, and Walkway Access Are Closed

The Diablo East Marina Cove, Scuba Cove, and walkway access are closed because of the presence of excessive docking material, unsafe walkway and dock, and unstable, loose ground. The area will reopen once these hazards have been corrected.

Only Left Side of Diablo East and Rough Canyon Boat Ramps Are Open - Rest Are Closed

Due to low water levels, only the left side of Diablo East and Rough Canyon boat ramps are open. Please use caution with Spur 406 and Spur 454 launches, as the water may be too shallow to launch most boats. To see a list of open ramps, click on "more."

Help Prevent Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Infestation

A number of lakes are infested with an array of aquatic invasive species that damage natural ecosystems and waterways. Boaters are advised to Clean, Drain, and Dry all boats and equipment every time they leave the water.

Visitor Center Will Be Open But Cannot Process Transactions on 8/14

On August 14, Amistad Visitor Center will provide orientation and information but cannot sell passes or permits or exchange annual lake use pass receipts. Camping permits and lake use passes may be purchased at fee machines or at Pay.gov.

About

Rough Canyon Campground sits at the edge of Amistad Reservoir in the semi-arid borderlands of southwest Texas. The campground provides access to excellent fishing and boating on the reservoir, which is known for largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass. The four primitive sites are arranged on level graded gravel, each equipped with a covered picnic table and BBQ grill. This is a no-frills camping experience: no drinking water or hookups are available at the sites. However, a comfort station with flush toilets and running water is located a short distance uphill near the boat ramp parking area and ranger station. A camp host may be present during winter months. The ranger station is staffed intermittently. The climate here is subtropical with hot, often humid summers and mild winters. Temperatures typically range from 40°F to 98°F. Most rainfall occurs April through October, often as heavy thunderstorms that can cause flash flooding. The boat ramp at Rough Canyon provides direct lake access, though water levels fluctuate significantly and ramp availability can be affected during low-water periods.

Directions

From Amistad National Recreation Area Visitor Center, head east (turn left out of parking lot) and drive 4.7 miles. Turn left onto Highway 377 North and travel 12.1 miles (follow signs to Sonora). Turn left onto Recreation Road 2 and travel 7.4 miles. Campground is located at the end of Recreation Road 2 just before the boat ramp area.
