About
Garner State Park has been a beloved Hill Country destination since the 1940s, drawing visitors back year after year with its cool, clear Frio River and time-honored traditions. Spanning 1,774 acres with 2.9 miles of river frontage, the park offers excellent swimming, tubing, fishing, and canoeing opportunities. Sixteen miles of scenic hiking trails wind through the terrain, and the park features paddle boat rentals, miniature golf, and geocaching. The park's camping options are extensive, with over 300 sites divided between the Old Garner and New Garner areas. Sites range from full hookup (water, electric, sewer) to water and electric combinations, down to water-only sites. The New Garner area includes the Rio Frio, Live Oak, River Crossing, Shady Meadows, and Persimmon Hill camping areas, while Old Garner encompasses Oakmont and Pecan Grove. RV size restrictions apply in some areas, particularly for water-only sites which accommodate rigs 20 feet or less. Since the 1940s, the park has hosted legendary jukebox dances at the historic concession building on summer evenings, a tradition that continues today. The concession building, dance pavilion, and other facilities were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park's concessionaire provides meals, snacks, and equipment rentals during busy season. Due to popularity, the park often reaches capacity and closes gates as early as 8:30 p.m. during peak periods. Reservations are highly recommended for both day use and camping.
