About

Kickapoo Cavern State Park offers a remote wilderness experience in southwestern Texas, about 90 minutes west of San Antonio. The park's 6,400 acres contain 20 known caves formed over millions of years, with Kickapoo Cavern and Stuart Bat Cave being the two largest. Kickapoo Cavern stretches 1,400 feet and is accessible via guided tours offered every Saturday at 1 p.m. Stuart Bat Cave hosts thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats from mid-March through October, and visitors can watch dramatic evening bat flights at dusk during warmer months. The park's lightly-developed landscape appeals to adventurous campers seeking solitude and authentic nature experiences. About 240 migrant and resident bird species have been sighted here, making it excellent for birding. Miles of trails wind through the rugged terrain, offering opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, with the Armadillo Lookout Trail providing panoramic views of the southwestern park area. The park maintains a bird blind near headquarters where visitors can observe wildlife. Camping facilities include five full hookup sites, 10 water-only sites for tents and small campers, and a 30-person group camp. The park cannot accommodate RVs over 36 feet due to road and site limitations. Campers must pack out all trash as the park has no trash disposal service. The park operates on a limited schedule, open only Friday through Monday, and often reaches capacity, so reservations are strongly recommended.

Directions

From San Antonio, take US 90W through Uvalde. In Brackettville, turn right onto RR 674 North and continue for about 23 miles. The park entrance is 1/4 mile past the Edwards County Line on the west side of the highway.
