River Highlands State Park River Campground

Open

Open for the 2026 season from May 1 through September 30. Reservations are required through ReserveAmerica; walk-ins are not accepted. One-night maximum stay. Campsites are in lowlands and potentially flood; check Connecticut River conditions before arrival.

About

River Highlands State Park River Campground provides a distinctive camping experience for paddlers exploring the Connecticut River. Located in Cromwell, the campground consists of two primitive tent-only sites situated in the lowlands along the riverbank. Access is exclusively by canoe or kayak, with no vehicle access or overnight parking available. Each site accommodates up to six people and includes a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grate. Facilities are basic: outhouses are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must carry in all drinking water. Trash containers are not provided, and campers must pack out all refuse. Campfires are permitted in the existing fire rings using downed timber only; ground fires are prohibited. Stays are limited to one night, and campers must break camp by 11:00 a.m. Pets are not permitted in the camping areas. Because the sites are in lowlands, campers should check Connecticut River conditions before arrival as the area is prone to flooding.
