About
Gillette Castle State Park River Camping offers a distinctive primitive camping experience accessible only by watercraft on the Connecticut River. Located within the grounds of the historic Gillette Castle estate, perched 200 feet above the river, this boat-in campsite is one of just four river camping locations in Connecticut. The single primitive site accommodates up to 20 people and serves as an ideal overnight stop for paddlers traveling the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail. The campsite features a pit toilet and minimal amenities, reflecting its primitive nature. No fires are permitted, and there are no mooring or docking facilities. Campers must arrive and depart by canoe or kayak only, with a strict one-night maximum stay and a 9:00 a.m. departure time. While camping, visitors can enjoy the solitude of the riverside location and views of the Connecticut River, with the historic Gillette Castle and its extensive trail system nearby on the hillside above. The camping season runs from May 1 through September 30, offering paddlers a unique opportunity to combine river exploration with a stay at one of Connecticut's most iconic state parks. At just $5 per person per night, this primitive site provides an affordable and memorable experience for adventurous campers willing to paddle to their destination.
