About
Chatfield Hollow Picnic Shelter sits within Chatfield Hollow State Park, a 412-acre outdoor recreation area in Killingworth featuring 18 miles of hiking trails, technical mountain biking terrain, rock climbing areas, and a 300-foot sandy beach on Schreeder Pond. The 20x30-foot covered shelter provides space for groups of up to 50 people with six picnic tables and two pedestal grills under the pavilion, plus an outdoor fire ring nearby. The shelter is located near Chatfield Hollow Brook and provides convenient access to restrooms, parking, and the beach. The park has a rich history dating back to its use by Native Americans as a hunting and gathering refuge. Remnants of early settlement include old building foundations, a restored waterwheel, and a covered bridge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The park's trails connect to adjacent Cockaponset State Forest, creating an extensive trail network. Schreeder Pond, backed by a CCC-built dam, offers swimming, and the park is designated as a Connecticut Trout Park with regular stocking of Chatfield Brook, Schreeder Pond, and Mill Pond.
