About

Wharton Brook Picnic Shelter sits within the historic Wharton Brook State Park, established in 1918 as one of Connecticut's first traveler wayside stops. The open-air shelter is surrounded by wooded sandy knolls and provides an ideal backdrop for group picnics and gatherings. The 96-acre park centers around the 5-acre Allen Brook Pond, which offers swimming with a sandy beach area during summer months and fishing opportunities year-round. As one of Connecticut's 11 designated Trout Parks, the pond is frequently stocked from opening day through Memorial Day, making it a popular destination for anglers of all skill levels. The park features hiking trails that provide a perimeter loop around the northern section with scenic pond views. Additional activities include winter ice skating when conditions permit. The picnic shelter can be reserved through Reserve America and offers convenient access to the park's amenities including parking areas along US Route 5. The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to sunset, providing a peaceful natural escape in the North Haven and Wallingford area.
