About
Rio Grande Campground sits in a grassy meadow right on the banks of the Rio Grande River, offering direct fishing access and serving as a popular put-in and take-out point for summer rafting. Despite its proximity to Highway 149, the campground sits below the road in the river bottom, reducing highway noise. The campground features 7 sites: three gravel pull-throughs and four dead-end gravel spurs. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. At 9,300 feet elevation, this is a primitive campground with vault toilets but no potable water, trash service, or hookups. Campers must pack out all trash and bring their own water. The access road is narrow and steep, making this campground unsuitable for large RVs or long/wide trailers. Maximum spur length is 25 feet, and not all sites accommodate vehicles of that length. This is bear country, so proper food storage is required. A Colorado fishing license is required to fish in the river, and the river poses a safety hazard for unsupervised children.
