About
Road Canyon Campground is a small, 6-site campground situated at the head of Road Canyon Reservoir along Forest Road 520 in the Rio Grande National Forest. Located in a fully open meadow at 9,300 feet elevation, the campground offers no tree cover or screening from the road. Each site includes a parking spur (maximum 50 feet), picnic table, and fire ring. An undeveloped overflow camping area is available directly across the road. The campground provides vault toilet facilities but no drinking water or firewood. During peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), trash service is provided by a concessionaire and fees are $26 per night. During the off-season, fees drop to $10 per night but campers must pack out all trash. The campground is managed on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Road Canyon Reservoir offers fishing access and a primitive boat launch. Boats are allowed with no-wake restrictions, and trolling motors are permitted. The area typically has availability when other upriver campgrounds are full. The 14-day camping limit applies, and campers should remain bear aware and store food properly. Interagency Senior and Access passes provide 50% discount on camping fees.
Directions
From Creede, travel southwest on Highway 149 toward Lake City for about 20 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 520 (Rio Grande Reservoir Road). Turn west onto FR 520 and drive almost 6 miles to the campground.
