About
The 30 Mile Stock Unloading Area is a primitive, dispersed facility designed specifically for equestrians and backcountry users traveling with pack stock in the Rio Grande National Forest. Located along Forest Road 520 near the Rio Grande Reservoir, approximately 30 miles from Creede, this unloading area provides essential infrastructure including hitching posts, small public corrals, and parking space for horse trailers. The facility serves as a staging point for riders accessing the network of trails in the area, including routes to Grizzly Lake and other backcountry destinations. Stock unloading and horse trailers are not permitted at the nearby Thirty Mile Campground, making this dedicated area essential for equestrian visitors. Creek water is available nearby for livestock. This is a primitive, no-fee area with no amenities provided. Visitors should be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. Access is via dirt forest roads that may be impassable during winter months or periods of heavy rain or snow.
Directions
From Creede, take State Highway 149 south toward Lake City for 19.3 miles to the Rio Grande Reservoir sign at Forest Road 520. Turn left onto Road 520 and go 0.5 miles to a Y intersection. Bear left staying on Road 520 and continue 10 miles, then turn left into the unloading area.
