About

River Hill Campground sits at 9,250 feet elevation on the banks of the Rio Grande River, 28 miles west of Creede in the Rio Grande National Forest. The double-loop campground features 20 sites arranged in a meadow surrounded by willows and spruce trees, with screened sites offering views of nearby forested hills and rock bluffs. Located just below Rio Grande Reservoir, the campground provides excellent access to trout fishing in the Rio Grande River, Grizzley Creek, Weminuche Creek, and Rio Grande Reservoir, which is 2.3 miles away. Two nearby trailheads provide access to the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado's largest wilderness area. Weminuche Creek Trail 818 and Grizzley Creek Trail 814 connect to the Continental Divide Trail for extended backpacking trips into rugged terrain featuring three peaks over 14,000 feet. The campground also offers kayaking opportunities on the Rio Grande River and proximity to Forest Road 533, a 4WD route leading to Stage Station Flat, site of an 1874 Brewster Stage Line swing station. Most sites accommodate trailers up to 30 feet, with some sites suitable for 40-foot units. Each site includes a parking spur, table, and fire ring. This popular campground typically fills from mid-June through August. Campground hosts are stationed on-site during the operating season. This is black bear country, requiring proper food storage practices.

Directions

From Creede, travel southwest on Colorado Highway 149 for 20.1 miles to the intersection with Forest Road 520 (Rio Grande Reservoir Road). Turn west on Forest Road 520 and travel about 9.5 miles on this gravel road to the campground.
