About
River Hill Campground occupies a scenic meadow on the banks of the Rio Grande River in the Rio Grande National Forest, surrounded by willows and spruce trees at an elevation of 9,200 feet. Located 28 miles west of Creede, Colorado, the campground sits just below Rio Grande Reservoir and offers excellent access to trout fishing, river kayaking, and hiking in the San Juan Mountains. Two trailheads near the campground, Weminuche Creek Trail 818 and Grizzley Creek Trail 814, provide access to the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado's largest wilderness area featuring three 14,000-foot peaks. These trails connect to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. The campground is also adjacent to Little Squaw Resort and near Forest Road 533, a popular 4WD route. The 20-site double-loop campground features well-screened sites with parking spurs, picnic tables, and fire rings. Facilities include two vault toilets with lights, potable water from hand pumps, and centralized trash collection during operating season. This is bear country, requiring proper food storage practices. The campground typically fills from mid-June through August, with campground hosts on site during the season.
