About
Red Mountain Campground is a Bureau of Land Management facility located along the lower Madison River in southwestern Montana. The campground features 19 campsites, with 11 available for advance reservations during the peak season from May 1st through September 15th. Outside this window, all sites operate on a first-come-first-served basis.
The Madison River is well known for its robust trout fishery, making this an ideal location for anglers. During warm summer months, the lower Madison River becomes a very popular destination for non-angling floaters and tubers. Red Mountain sits roughly halfway between Warm Springs boat launch and Black's Ford Fishing Access Site, providing excellent access for both fishing and floating activities. While there is no boat launch at the campground itself, several are available in the vicinity.
The campground includes basic amenities such as vault toilets, drinking water when operational, fire pits, and picnic tables at each site. A volunteer seasonal campground host is present during peak season. Nearby attractions include the Bear Trap Canyon unit of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area and Norris Hot Springs. The campground typically fills on weekends during peak season with lighter use during weekdays.
