Spanish Creek Cabin

Open — Open year-round for reservations at $65 per night via Recreation.gov. December 2 through May 15, Spanish Creek Road is closed to wheeled motor vehicles 5 miles from Highway 191, requiring guests to ski, snowshoe, hike, or bike 3.5 miles to reach the cabin.

About

Spanish Creek Cabin is a historic rental cabin constructed in 1934 that retains its rustic character while serving as an excellent base camp for year-round recreation. Located 23 miles southwest of Bozeman at 6,200 feet elevation, the cabin sits in a large meadow at the base of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness with South Fork Spanish Creek flowing nearby and the densely-forested Madison Range surrounding it. The two-story cabin accommodates up to 4 people with bunk beds and beds with mattresses. It includes a wood cook stove, basic kitchen cleaning equipment, and a campfire ring. An outhouse with a vault toilet is provided. The cabin has no electricity or running water, so guests must bring drinking water, bedding, lanterns, food, and other necessities. The cabin remains locked year-round with a combination code provided upon reservation. A nearby trailhead provides access to extensive trail networks heading south into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and west into non-wilderness areas, suitable for hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Trails lead to Little Hell Roaring Creek, the Madison Range, and the South Fork of Spanish Creek. The area offers fishing and hunting opportunities and is home to grizzly bears, moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and diverse bird species. During summer, wildflowers add color around the cabin.

Directions

From Bozeman, drive west toward Four Corners, then south on US Highway 191 for 19.5 miles. Turn right onto Spanish Creek Road and drive 9 miles to the National Forest boundary. Continue toward Spanish Creek Trailhead; look for a jack leg fence and access gate on the left (east) side of the road. Winter access (December 2-May 15): Park at the Forest Service gate 5 miles from Highway 191 and ski, snowshoe, hike, or bike 3.5 miles to the cabin.
