About

Missouri Headwaters State Park encompasses the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers, where they merge to form the 2,300-mile Missouri River. This 532-acre National Historic Landmark preserves the abundant wildlife, vegetation, and scenic beauty that have attracted people for thousands of years. The Lewis and Clark Expedition camped here in 1805, and Sacajawea was captured at this location as a child before returning as a member of the Corps of Discovery. The park provides 17 campsites with fire rings and picnic tables, plus a tipi rental option. Visitors enjoy river floating, fishing, boating, hiking on interpretive trails, bicycling, wildlife viewing, and photography. The park features foot trails to points of interest and interpretive displays showcasing the area's cultural and natural history. Located at 4,045 feet elevation near Three Forks, Montana, the park offers stunning views of distant mountains surrounding extensive plains and meadows.
