Spire Rock Campground

About

Spire Rock Campground is located in scenic Gallatin Canyon on the Bozeman Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest, approximately 26 miles south of Bozeman, Montana. The campground sits at 5,600 feet elevation next to Storm Castle Creek, a tributary of the Gallatin River. Most of the 17 campsites are positioned along the creek and shaded by spruce and fir trees. One group site accommodates larger parties. The surrounding area offers excellent outdoor recreation. Anglers target rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout, whitefish, and Arctic grayling on the Gallatin River. Rafting and kayaking are popular on the river as well. The Storm Castle Trail begins nearby, a steep 3-mile climb to Storm Castle Rock with panoramic canyon views. Garnet Mountain Lookout Trail also starts near the campground, climbing 2,800 feet over 3.5 miles to a fire lookout. A variety of wildlife inhabits the canyon, including bald eagles, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, mountain goats, deer, and coyotes. Both black bears and grizzly bears are active in the area, and all food must be stored in approved bear-resistant containers.

Directions

From Bozeman, travel south on Highway 191 for 23 miles to the Storm Castle turnoff. Turn left and go 2-3 miles on Storm Castle Creek Road (gravel) to the campground. From West Yellowstone, go 66 miles north on Highway 191 to the Storm Castle turnoff, turn right after the bridge, and continue 3 miles.
