About

Jess Judy is a group camping facility situated on the western banks of the South Branch of the Potomac River in the northern portion of Monongahela National Forest. Located in Smoke Hole Canyon, the campground is about 1.5 miles south of Big Bend Campground in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. The canyon's name has uncertain origins, with theories ranging from Native Americans smoking meat in nearby caves to misty fog ascending from the river like smoke. The campground offers excellent access to water-based recreation including canoeing and fishing on the South Branch of the Potomac River. Approximately 30 miles of maintained trails are nearby, with most open to mountain biking. The North Fork Mountain Trail is highly recommended for hikers and backpackers. The region features beautiful old-growth forests that display vibrant colors in fall, and the campground's location provides a wilderness experience within driving distance of cities like Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh.
