About
Rat Trap Gap Campground and Trailhead is a remote, primitive campground located at approximately 5,938 feet elevation in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The campground serves as a gateway to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness and offers several campsites designed to accommodate both traditional campers and equestrian users. Stock facilities including corrals and hitching areas are available for those traveling with horses or pack animals. This is a no-fee, first-come, first-served campground with basic amenities. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water available, so visitors must bring their own water or be prepared to treat natural sources. The campground is accessed via Forest Road 29N45, approximately 17 miles from Highway 36. The name "Yolla Bolly" comes from the Wintun Indian language, where "Yo-la" means "snow covered" and "Bo-li" means "high peak," reflecting the area's rugged, mountainous character and winter conditions.
Directions
From Highway 36, turn southwest on Forest Road 29N45 and drive approximately 17 miles to reach the campground.
