About
Hammerhorn Lake Campground is a small, remote campground situated in the eastern reaches of Mendocino National Forest, approximately 18 miles north of the Eel River Work Center via Road M1 (Indian Dick Road). The nine campsites sit a short distance above a scenic 5-acre lake surrounded by mixed conifer forest with smaller hardwood trees and shrubs. The lake is stocked with trout in early summer by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and non-motorized boating is permitted. The campground underwent extensive restoration after being severely damaged by the 2020 August Complex fire and subsequent winter storms. Restoration work included installation of new fire rings and barriers, replacement of damaged picnic tables, removal of fallen trees, hazard mitigation, and reconstruction of the trail and fishing pier. The campground reopened on September 26, 2025, with a resurfaced wheelchair-accessible half-mile trail around the lake and designated accessible parking. This is a primitive campground with no potable water, so campers must bring their own drinking water. There are no trash services; pack out all waste. The access road and campground are unpaved, and one trailer pull-through site is available. Quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with check-in at 2 p.m. and checkout at 11 a.m.
Directions
From Highway 101, approximately 12 miles north of Willits, turn right on Highway 162 toward Covelo. One and a half miles north of Covelo, turn right on Highway 162 East and continue 11 miles to the Eel River Work Center. The campground is located 18 miles north of the Eel River Work Center via Road M1 (Indian Dick Road).
