About
Flat Mountain Pond Shelter is a remote backcountry shelter located at the southwest edge of Flat Mountain Pond in the Sandwich Range Wilderness of White Mountain National Forest. The Adirondack-style shelter sleeps 6-8 people and features one designated overflow tent site with capacity for two tents. The site offers scenic views into the heart of the Sandwich Range Wilderness and sits along the shores of Flat Mountain Pond. The shelter is accessible via the Flat Mountain Pond Trail, positioned approximately mid-way along the trail arc at 4.8 miles from the Bennett Street Trailhead or 5.3 miles from the Whiteface Intervale Trailhead. The approach from Bennett Street follows an old railroad grade making for relatively easy hiking terrain. A composting toilet is available at the site, and campers have access to the pond for water collection, though all water must be treated or filtered before consumption. This is a backcountry primitive camping area with no amenities. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for wilderness conditions. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round with no reservation system. Winter access requires appropriate winter hiking and camping gear as trails can be challenging in snow conditions.
Directions
Access via Flat Mountain Pond Trail from either Bennett Street Trailhead (4.8 miles) or Whiteface Intervale Trailhead (5.3 miles). The Bennett Street approach follows an old railroad grade.
