About
Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve is North Carolina's first State Natural Area, designated in 1963 to protect a unique remnant of the longleaf pine forests that once covered millions of acres across the southeastern United States. Located near Southern Pines in Moore County's Sandhills region, this 930-acre preserve features towering longleaf pines, some centuries old, rising above expanses of wiregrass in a landscape that supports extraordinary biodiversity. The preserve is home to more than 500 animal and plant species adapted to the Sandhills ecosystem, including rare and intriguing inhabitants such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, fox squirrel, Sandhills pyxie-moss, pine snake, and the carnivorous purple pitcher plant. Visitors can explore multiple nature trails ranging from half a mile to 3.5 miles in length, all well-maintained and offering intimate views of this remarkable forest ecosystem. Weymouth Woods operates as a day-use facility only and does not offer camping. The preserve opens daily at 8 AM year-round with no entrance fees required. A visitor center with exhibits about the longleaf pine ecosystem and the Sandhills region is open to the public. The preserve is closed only on Christmas Day, making it accessible for nature study, hiking, and wildlife observation throughout the year.
