About
Myles Standish State Forest encompasses over 12,000 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak barrens in southeastern Massachusetts, making it the largest publicly-owned recreation area in the state. The forest contains 58 kettle ponds formed by glacial activity, with camping areas clustered around Charge Pond, Fearing Pond, Curlew Pond, Barretts Pond, and other scenic water bodies. The sandy, well-drained soils support a globally rare pine barren ecosystem. The campground offers approximately 400 sites across five distinct camping areas, plus three yurts, equestrian camping facilities, and group sites accommodating up to 20 people. Each standard campsite features a fire ring and picnic table. Modern comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers are located throughout the camping loops. While no utility hookups are available, a dump station is provided for RV and trailer campers. Beyond camping, the forest offers extensive recreation including swimming at designated pond beaches, over 35 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, and equestrian trails. Fishing is popular in the numerous ponds. The forest's diverse habitats support wildlife observation opportunities, and interpretive programs are offered seasonally.
Directions
From Route 3, take Exit 5 and turn west onto Long Pond Road. Continue approximately 3 miles to the park entrance on the right. The forest can also be accessed from Cranberry Road in Carver.
