Established in 1916 and developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the forest features close to 400 campsites distributed across five camping areas set along kettle ponds including Charge Pond, College Pond, Curlew Pond, Fearing Pond, and Barrett Pond. The campgrounds accommodate both tents and small trailers, with sites featuring picnic tables and fire rings. The forest provides extensive recreational opportunities with 13 miles of hiking trails, 35 miles of equestrian trails, and 15 miles of bicycle trails winding through pine and oak forests. Swimming beaches at several ponds offer summer recreation, while fishing is available throughout the forest's many water bodies. Special amenities include designated horse camping areas at Charge Pond, group campsites accommodating up to 20 people, and three yurts. The forest is located approximately 45 miles south of Boston and just 20 minutes from historic Plymouth, making it an ideal base for exploring southeastern Massachusetts.
