With hunting season underway, the National Forests in Mississippi is reminding all forest visitors to exercise caution and safety when visiting a national forest. Hunting is a safe, recreational sport. Some visitors, however, are sometimes surprised when they meet hunters on the forest.

Puskus Lake Recreation Area offers a peaceful retreat in Holly Springs National Forest for campers who prefer a remote, primitive camping experience. Surrounding a scenic 96-acre lake stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and occasional crappie or catfish, this recreation area provides an excellent destination for anglers and nature enthusiasts seeking solitude. The campground features 19 primitive campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Additional amenities include 13 day-use picnic sites, a boat ramp for lake access, fishing piers, and a 1-mile hiking trail that loops around portions of the lake. Vault toilets are available, but campers must bring their own water as no potable water is provided on-site. The fee station at the entrance operates on an honor system with no attendant on duty, so visitors should bring exact cash or checks. With its fairly remote location and lack of modern conveniences, Puskus Lake Recreation Area appeals to self-sufficient campers who appreciate a quiet environment and don't mind primitive conditions. The combination of fishing opportunities, peaceful lakeside camping, and easy hiking makes it an ideal base for a low-key outdoor getaway in north-central Mississippi.

From Oxford, travel east on MS Highway 30 for 7 miles. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 2089 and drive 3 miles to the entrance.
