Porcupine Flat Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Tioga Road and the campground typically open in late June and close in mid-October, depending on snow conditions and seasonal road work. Reservations are released two weeks in advance on a rolling daily window at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time via Recreation.gov during the operating season.

About

Porcupine Flat Campground offers a quieter, more primitive camping experience in Yosemite's high country, situated at 8,100 feet elevation along the scenic Tioga Road. Located approximately 30 minutes west of Tuolumne Meadows and over an hour from Yosemite Valley, this 52-site campground provides a more secluded alternative to busier valley campgrounds. The campground sits near Porcupine Creek, which serves as the only water source and must be filtered, treated, or boiled before consumption. The Porcupine Creek Trailhead is nearby, offering access to high country hiking. The narrow access roads within the campground make it unsuitable for RVs and trailers over 24 feet. The campground has vault toilets and food storage lockers but no other amenities or visitor services nearby. From this location, visitors can explore Tuolumne Meadows 25 miles to the east, access trails to Lukens Lake and Harden Lake, or drive west to the Tuolumne and Merced Groves of Giant Sequoias. The Tioga Road provides a stunning 39-mile scenic drive through forests, meadows, and granite landscapes, though cell service is minimal throughout the area.

Directions

From Yosemite Valley, take Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Road east 38 miles (approximately 70 minutes). From Highway 120 west/Big Oak Flat Road entrance, take Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Road 31 miles (45 minutes). From Tioga Pass (east entrance), drive 24 miles west on Tioga Road (35 minutes). The campground is located north of Tioga Road.
