About
Ponderosa Grove Campground is situated approximately eight miles northwest of Kanab, Utah, at 6,300 feet elevation on approximately sixteen acres of BLM-managed public lands. Named for the small canopy of ponderosa pine trees that shade its campsites, the campground was originally designed and constructed in the 1970s and underwent significant expansion completed in 2021. The expanded facility now includes 26 car-camping sites with gravel tent platforms and fire rings, 6 RV sites, 2 walk-in campsites, and a reservable group camping area that accommodates up to 40 people with a shade pavilion, group fire pit, and double vault restroom.
The campground sits amid rolling sagebrush and scrub hills forming the top of the Vermilion Cliffs, a short distance north of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Views encompass the White Cliffs and the colorful pink cliffs of the Bryce geologic formation. Wildlife in the area includes mule deer, raptors, coyotes, rabbits, and quail. As the adjacent sand dunes became a popular OHV destination, the campground evolved to serve ATV and UTV enthusiasts alongside traditional campers.
Ponderosa Grove serves as a convenient base for visitors to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Zion National Park, and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Recreation activities in the area include OHV riding, sightseeing, hiking, photography, horseback riding, hunting, and climbing. The climate ranges from extremely cold winters to summer temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The average length of stay is 2-3 nights.
