About

Lava Point Campground is a remote, primitive campground situated at 7,890 feet above sea level in Zion National Park, accessible via the Kolob Terrace Road. Located approximately 25 miles north of the town of Virgin and about 1 hour 20 minutes from the South Entrance of Zion Canyon, this high-elevation retreat offers a more secluded camping experience compared to the park's busier valley campgrounds. The campground's elevation provides significantly cooler temperatures, often 20-30 degrees lower than the main canyon floor, making it a welcome escape during southern Utah's intense summer heat. The campground features 6 primitive tent-only campsites nestled among pine and aspen trees that provide natural shade and wind protection. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit with grill. Due to the narrow, winding access road, vehicles longer than 19 feet are not permitted. Barney's Trail departs directly from the campground, providing access to the stunning Lava Point Overlook with its breathtaking panoramic views south toward Zion Canyon, as well as connecting to the West Rim Trail for longer backcountry adventures. The remote location and high elevation also make this an excellent spot for wildlife watching and stargazing, far from the light pollution of nearby towns.

Directions

From Virgin, Utah, take Kolob Terrace Road north for 25 miles (approximately 45 minutes). Turn right onto Lava Point Road and follow for a short distance to the signed campground entrance. Note: vehicles longer than 19 feet are not permitted on this road.
