South Campground - Closed For Rehabilitation
Closed
— Closed for complete rehabilitation through the 2025 camping season. Phase 1 construction is anticipated to be completed in late spring 2026. The project includes improvements to all campsites, drinking water systems, stormwater drains, and comfort stations.
About
South Campground sits near the south entrance of Zion National Park, just a half mile from Springdale, Utah, and within walking distance of the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and shuttle system. Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s and completed in 1935, the campground has served visitors for nearly a century with most infrastructure dating to the 1960s. The Virgin River runs adjacent to the campground, surrounded by cottonwood trees that turn golden in fall. The facility includes 117 sites accommodating tents and RVs up to 40 feet, with four group sites available. All sites feature picnic tables and fire rings. Three trails are accessible directly from the campground: the Watchman Trail ascending the peak behind the campground, the Archeology Trail leading to an archaeological site, and the Pa'rus Trail, a paved riverside path that's the only trail in the park allowing dogs. The campground is undergoing complete rehabilitation funded by the Great American Outdoors Act to modernize drinking water systems, stormwater management, comfort stations, and all campsites. This work addresses decades of deferred maintenance and will improve accessibility for future visitors.
