About
Pole Creek Cabin occupies a unique location at 8,200 feet elevation on the Powder River Ranger District in Bighorn National Forest. Built in the mid-1950s by the E-La-Ka-Wee Boy Scouts as a summer camp retreat and refurbished in the early 1990s as a winter warming hut, this historic cabin offers a quiet end-of-the-road setting nestled in lodgepole pine forest at the edge of a meadow. The area is frequented by moose and diverse wildlife species. The two-room cabin sleeps 4-6 people with two sets of bunk beds and floor space for additional cots or sleeping bags. The main room features a wood stove for heat, kitchen cabinets and counter, table, chairs and benches with basic utensils provided. Outside amenities include a fire ring, picnic table, and vault toilet. Firewood is provided on-site. Guests must bring their own water, cooking equipment, and be prepared to pack out all trash. The cabin's location along both the Pole Creek Cross Country Ski Area trail system and winter snowmobile trails makes it an excellent base for winter activities. Summer and fall bring opportunities for fishing at nearby Tie Hack Reservoir, touring scenic Crazy Woman Canyon, mountain biking, ATV riding, hiking, and hunting. In spring, the area bursts with wildflowers. Winter access requires cross-country skis or snowmobiles from the Nordic Ski area parking lot at Forest Road 473 and Highway 16. Buffalo, Wyoming is within a half-hour drive for amenities.
Directions
From Buffalo, Wyoming, take State Highway 16 west 22 miles. Turn right on Forest Road 456 and travel approximately 1 mile to a large open meadow. The cabin is situated on the west side of the road, back in the trees 50 yards. Vehicles can be parked along the timber edge in front of the buck-and-rail wooden fence. Winter access from the Nordic Ski area parking lot at Forest Road 473 and Highway 16, by cross-country skis or snowmobiles only.
