About
Hettinger Group Area offers a secluded group camping experience in the Bighorn National Forest, positioned in a small meadow surrounded by dense lodgepole pine forest at 7,600 feet elevation. The single reservable group site can accommodate up to 150 people and features picnic tables, grills, a campfire circle with benches, vault toilets, drinking water from a hand pump, and bear-resistant trash collection. The campground is ideally situated near Tie Hack Reservoir, a short drive away offering canoeing and fishing for rainbow, cutthroat, brown, and brook trout. A trail connects the campground to the lake. The Circle Park Trailhead is just 3 miles away, providing access to numerous alpine lakes and two 12,000-foot peaks within the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Scenic off-road driving opportunities abound on nearby Elgin Park, Pole Creek, and Crazy Woman Canyon Roads. South Fork Lodge is nearby with dining, lodging, guided horseback riding, and a small store with fishing and camping supplies. The nearest RV dump station is 18 miles away at Powder River Pass.
Directions
From Buffalo, WY, head west on U.S. Highway 16 for about 12 miles, then turn onto Forest System Road 131 and continue 0.4 mile west to the campground.
