About
Muddy Guard Cabin dates back to the late 1930s when it was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a Forest Service guard station. The cabin is made of peeled logs with saddle corner notching and sits in a large open meadow near Muddy Creek at approximately 7,800 feet elevation. A dense forest of lodgepole pine surrounds the meadow, and Crazy Woman Canyon lies a short distance to the northeast. The cabin features two bedrooms: one with two bunk beds and another with a double bed, accommodating up to 6 people. The kitchen includes an electric cooking stove, small refrigerator, grey water sink, dining table, and chairs. A wood stove provides heat. Outside, guests will find a fire ring, picnic table, and a horse corral with hitching post for those exploring the area on horseback. Guests must bring their own drinking water, bedding, cooking utensils, firewood, and trash bags. A vault toilet is located near the cabin. Winter access is possible via cross-country skis, snowmobiles, or snowshoes along a 200-yard stretch when the road is not maintained.
Directions
From Buffalo, WY, take Highway 16 west 24 miles. Turn left on Crazy Woman Road (FSR 33), travel 400 feet, then turn right on FSR 473. Entry via gate; keep gate closed.
