About

Point Mugu State Park's La Jolla Group Campground offers an excellent base camp for large groups exploring the western Santa Monica Mountains. The group site accommodates up to 50 people and 16 vehicles, with amenities including five picnic tables, a large ramada for shade, fire rings with grills, flush toilets, and token-operated showers (accepting only one dollar bills). The campground is situated approximately one mile inland from the Pacific coast. The park encompasses 13,300 acres featuring five miles of ocean shoreline with rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, and sand dunes. Over 70 miles of hiking trails wind through rugged hills, two major river canyons, and wide grassy valleys dotted with sycamores, oaks, and native walnuts. Trails include access to the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area and connect to the Backbone Trail system. The nearby beach offers swimming, body surfing, and surf fishing. Campers check in at Thornhill Broome Campground to collect vehicle tags. The campground gates open at 8am and close at 10pm with no entry permitted after 10pm. Dogs are welcome in the campground but are not allowed on backcountry trails. Mountain lions have been spotted in the area, and hikers should take appropriate precautions, especially during dawn and dusk.
