Anacapa Island Campground offers a unique primitive camping experience on East Anacapa Island, perched on bluffs 250 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Accessible only by boat via Island Packers from Ventura or Oxnard, visitors must climb 157 stairs from the landing cove and hike half a mile to reach the seven campsites. The campground provides commanding views of the surrounding ocean and neighboring islands. The island's volcanic origins are evident in towering sea cliffs, sea caves, and natural formations like the iconic 40-foot Arch Rock. Two miles of trails lead to dramatic overlooks and the historic 1932 light station. The treeless, exposed terrain turns from brown to vibrant green after winter rains, and the island hosts the largest breeding colony of western gulls in the world. From April through mid-August, nesting western gulls create rookery conditions with constant noise, guano, and territorial birds. Recreational opportunities include exploring rich kelp forests at Landing Cove for snorkeling, diving, and kayaking, as well as observing California sea lions, harbor seals, and seasonal seabird nesting. Campers must be completely self-sufficient, bringing all water, food, and camping gear. The exposed conditions require sturdy, low-profile tents and preparation for wind, sun, and potential fog. Since boat pickups can be affected by sea conditions, visitors should pack supplies for an extra day.
