About
Placer Campground is a rustic USFS campground located near Mammoth Pool Reservoir in the Bass Lake Ranger District of Sierra National Forest. Situated in the rugged Sierra Nevada foothills northeast of North Fork, California, the campground provides access to the popular Mammoth Pool recreation area. Each campsite includes a picnic table, metal grill, and fire ring. Vault toilets serve the campground, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring adequate drinking water. The remote location and lack of hookups make this a primitive camping experience suited for tent campers and smaller RVs or trailers. The campground enforces a 30-foot maximum vehicle length and explicitly notes that larger RVs are not recommended due to road and site conditions. Boat parking is not permitted at individual campsites, though boats may be stored at the nearby launch area or at Wagner's private campground, which also offers gas, a store, and food services.
Directions
From Fresno, take Highway 41 north to Road 200. Turn right and travel east to North Fork. Continue through North Fork and travel 37 miles northeast on Minarets Road (Forest Road 81) to Mammoth Pool Road (Forest Road 25). Turn right and travel 1/2 mile to the campground turnoff.
