About
Mammoth Pool Campground is located half a mile from the recreation area at Mammoth Pool Reservoir in Sierra National Forest. This primitive campground winds through a stand of Ponderosa pine and cedar trees along the San Joaquin River in the midst of a mountainous landscape. Each site has a table, grill, and fire ring. Firewood is available for purchase at the campground. Mammoth Pool Reservoir offers fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. A boat ramp is available at the reservoir, though the reservoir is closed to boating and fishing May 1 through June 16 to protect annual deer migration. Hikers can access the nearby French Trail, a 12.7-mile foot trail that provides access to the Ansel Adams Wilderness, known for its jagged peaks including 13,157-foot Mt. Ritter and numerous alpine lakes and streams. The campground is in bear country and campers must store all food in bear-proof lockers. Wagner's Mammoth Pool Resort nearby offers gas and supplies. The Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, an 83-mile drive, is a popular attraction in the area.
