About
Pipes Canyon Trail Camp is a primitive backcountry camping destination in the San Bernardino National Forest, situated in the high desert terrain northwest of Pioneertown. The area lies near the Wildlands Conservancy's Pioneertown Mountains Preserve and within or adjacent to the Pipes Canyon Wilderness, California's largest nonprofit wilderness at over 20,000 acres. As a trail camp, this site offers a rugged backcountry experience with minimal to no developed facilities. Campers should come fully prepared with all necessary water, supplies, and gear for primitive camping. The surrounding landscape features dramatic volcanic mesas, the Sawtooth Mountains, and seasonal riparian habitat in Pipes Canyon where water occasionally surfaces to support an isolated desert oasis. Access to the area may require a wilderness permit if camping within designated wilderness boundaries. Standard National Forest dispersed camping rules apply: 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period, camp at least 200 feet from water sources and trails, and pack out all trash. Campfires are prohibited in wilderness areas.
Directions
From Pioneertown, head northwest on Pipes Canyon Road for approximately 4 miles. The trail camp is located in the backcountry of San Bernardino National Forest near the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve boundary.
