About
Piney Creek Horse Camp is a primitive equestrian camping facility located in the Davy Crockett National Forest near Kennard, Texas. The camp provides access to approximately 53 miles of horse trails that wind through the East Texas pineywoods. The facility is specifically designed for horse camping and offers basic amenities including vault toilets, potable water, and trash receptacles. The trail system is primitive in nature and traverses varied terrain including bottomlands that are prone to flooding during wet weather. Some sections of the trail route around these bottomlands and remain usable even in wet conditions. Riders should exercise caution and be prepared for challenging conditions. Trail riding groups exceeding 75 persons including spectators require a Special-Use Permit and must contact the District Office at least three months in advance. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. A daily fee of $10 covers both camping and use of the entire trail system, or an annual permit is available for $50 per vehicle valid from January through December. Interagency Recreation Passes are honored for day use, and Senior/Access passes provide a 50% discount on camping fees.
Directions
From Lufkin: Take Hwy. 103 West for 16 miles to Hwy. 7 West and continue for 13 miles to Kennard. Turn left at the Kennard Post Office on CR 4625 and go approximately 2.5 miles to Piney Creek Horse Camp sign at FS 566; turn right and go 1 mile to the camp.
