About

Piney Creek Horse Camp is an equestrian-focused primitive campground in the Davy Crockett National Forest, providing access to approximately 53 miles of horse trails winding through East Texas pineywoods. The trail system follows forest service roads, old tram roads, pipeline right-of-ways, and game trails, with some sections cleared through dense forest. Facilities are basic: vault toilets, potable water from faucets, and trash receptacles. The camp operates year-round, 24 hours a day, on a first-come, first-served basis. A $10 daily fee covers camping and trail access per vehicle or per user if no vehicle is parked. An annual permit is available for $50 per vehicle, valid January through December. The trail is considered primitive, and riders should exercise caution in wet weather as portions of the trail flood. Some sections route around bottomlands and remain usable during wet conditions. Groups exceeding 75 persons including spectators must obtain a Special-Use Permit by contacting the Davy Crockett District Office at least three months in advance.

Directions

From Lufkin: Take Highway 103 West for 16 miles to Highway 7 West and continue for 13 miles to Kennard. Turn left at the Kennard Post Office on CR 4625 and go approximately 2.5 miles to the Piney Creek Horse Camp sign at FS 566. Turn right and go 1 mile to the camp.
