About
Double Lake Recreation Area was constructed in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and sits on a 23-acre lake within the Sam Houston National Forest. The campground provides a variety of camping options including tent sites, RV sites with electric hookups, and group camping facilities. The lake is stocked with bass, bream, and catfish and is open for fishing year-round, though only boats with small electric motors are permitted. The recreation area features extensive trail access, including a 21-mile mountain bike trail that winds around the lake and a 5-mile section of the Lone Star Hiking Trail leading to Big Creek Scenic Area. During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy swimming at the sandy beach. The surrounding forest consists of rolling hills covered with hardwoods and pines, providing a peaceful natural setting. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov for individual sites, group sites, and a shelter that accommodates up to 75 people. Day use is also available for a per-vehicle fee. The area experiences hot and humid summers from June to August, with moderate to cool temperatures and wet conditions from September through May.
