Pines Campground offers a scenic high-country camping experience at 9,200 feet elevation in the Routt National Forest, located 25 miles southeast of Walden in the Gould area. The recently renovated campground features 11 campsites situated along the South Fork of the Michigan River, a scenic mountain stream at the base of Owl Mountain. The campground serves as an excellent base for outdoor enthusiasts seeking both motorized and non-motorized recreation. OHV enthusiasts can access trails for all skill levels, from scenic forest riding on Forest Road 740 to more challenging routes like Silver Creek Road and Calamity Pass. Hikers and backpackers can access multiple trailheads leading into the Never Summer Wilderness, including Silver Creek, South Fork, Jack Park, Jack Creek, Illinois River, and Illinois Pass trails, which connect to the back side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Campsites accommodate vehicles up to 20 feet in length and include campfire rings and picnic tables. The campground provides vault toilets and trash service throughout the season. Drinking water is not available at Pines Campground itself but can be found at nearby Aspen Campground, about 2 miles away. Cell phone reception is limited, with T-Mobile and AT&T working best. The closest services are in Walden, approximately 35 miles away, which offers a free public dump station and potable water fill.

Directions

From Walden, head east on Highway 14 for 22 miles to Gould. Take County Road 21 (Forest Road 740) south 4 miles to the campground. Follow the signs.
