About

Pickett's Mill Battlefield State Historic Site preserves one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields in the United States, where 24,000 troops clashed on May 27, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign. The Confederate victory under General Patrick Cleburne resulted in 1,600 Federal casualties and delayed the Union advance on Atlanta by one week. Today, visitors can walk the same ravine where hundreds died, see original earthworks constructed by soldiers, and travel roads used by both Federal and Confederate troops. The 765-acre site offers 4 miles of hiking trails that meander through forests and fields, providing access to preserved earthworks, artillery emplacements, and battle routes. An authentic 1800s pioneer cabin is furnished and open during special events. The visitor center houses Civil War artifacts and exhibits, including one of the two original cannons used during the battle, on loan from the Atlanta History Center. This is a day-use facility with no overnight camping. Available amenities include a rentable enclosed group shelter, picnic tables, and a playground. The site serves as a green oasis for hikers in the suburban sprawl of metro Atlanta while preserving an important piece of American Civil War history.
