About

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Pedernales Falls State Park encompasses 5,212 acres and six miles of Pedernales River frontage. The park's centerpiece is a scenic limestone gorge where the river flows over massive slabs creating dramatic falls and pools. Just 30 miles west of Austin, this popular destination offers a mix of developed and primitive camping experiences. The main campground features 69 sites with water and electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings with grills, and access to restroom facilities with showers. For backcountry enthusiasts, the Wolf Ridge primitive camping area offers hike-in sites accessed by a challenging four-mile round trip trail. These primitive sites require backpacking gear, and campers must pack in water and use containerized fuel stoves only. Recreation opportunities are extensive. The river provides swimming, wading, tubing, and fishing access, though the falls area itself is closed to water activities due to dangerous conditions. Hiking trails range from the easy half-mile Twin Falls Nature Trail with scenic overlooks to the challenging six-mile Wolf Mountain Trail. Mountain bikers can test their skills on the technical 10-mile Juniper Ridge Trail. The park also maintains 10 miles of rugged equestrian trails and offers horseback riding opportunities. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with a bird blind and butterfly garden for close observation.
