About
Palmetto State Park preserves a rare botanical anomaly in the Texas coastal plains where dwarf palmettos, typically found much farther south, thrive alongside swamps, artesian springs, and the San Marcos River. The 270-acre park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and their handiwork remains visible in the refectory building with its air-conditioned kitchen and covered pavilion. Camping options include 19 tent sites with water hookups and 17 RV sites with 30/50-amp electric and water connections, all featuring picnic tables, outdoor grills, and fire rings. The RV sites accommodate rigs up to 65 feet but are back-in only. A secluded group camp bordered by the San Marcos River on three sides holds up to 25 people. The park's four-acre Oxbow Lake offers fishing from a pier, and fishing equipment is available to borrow. The park often reaches capacity, particularly from March through November, so reservations are strongly recommended. A burn ban is currently in effect prohibiting wood fires, though charcoal grills and containerized fuel stoves remain permitted.
