About

Located along the Rio Grande River at 8,300 feet elevation, Palisade Campground is the only developed campground in the canyon between Creede and South Fork. The campground features 12 sites arranged primarily in one large loop, with some sites out in the open and others screened by cottonwoods, aspen, spruce, and fir trees. Highway 149 runs along the northeast side with no screening, and active railroad tracks bisect the campground, with scenic railroad excursions occasionally passing through during summer months. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations available. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a concessionaire provides full services including potable water from a hand pump, trash service, and a camp host. During this peak season, fees are $29-31 per night for camping and $12 for day use. The campground is heavily used and typically stays full from mid-June through August; early afternoon arrival is recommended. During the off-season, the campground remains open but operates with reduced services and a $10 per night fee. No water or trash service is available, and campers must pack out all garbage. The site may be inaccessible due to snow levels or spring road closures. Maximum spur length is 35 feet, though not all sites accommodate vehicles of this length. The Rio Grande River provides excellent fishing and rafting opportunities, making this a popular destination despite highway and railroad noise.

Directions

From South Fork, take Highway 149 west toward Creede for 7.3 miles to the campground sign and turn left. From Creede, travel 12.1 miles southeast on Highway 149 toward South Fork to the campground entrance.
