About

Palisade Campground offers a unique riverside camping experience on the Rio Grande, positioned as the only developed campground in the canyon corridor between Creede and South Fork. The 12 sites vary in character, with some fully exposed and others screened by cottonwoods, aspens, spruce, and fir trees. Active railroad tracks bisect the campground, and occasional scenic railroad excursions pass through, adding to the area's character. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when potable water from a hand pump and trash service are available. During shoulder season, water is shut off and campers must pack out trash. A camp host is typically stationed here during summer months. Fishing and rafting on the Rio Grande are the primary draws. The campground tends to fill from mid-June through August, so early afternoon arrival is recommended during peak season. Firewood is not provided but may be gathered on surrounding Forest Service lands.
