About

Alder Guard Station is a historic two-story cabin constructed in 1910 that originally served as the residence and office for the local ranger district. Today it offers a comfortable retreat for up to 8 guests seeking relaxation and recreation in the Rio Grande National Forest. The cabin features two bedrooms with two beds each, plus a futon on the first floor. Modern amenities include electricity, an electric stove, refrigerator, hot water, and a flush toilet, though the wood stove remains the only heat source. The cabin is fully furnished with a dining table, kitchen table, cooking utensils, and some pots and pans, but guests must bring sleeping bags or linens, towels, dish soap, toilet paper, and garbage bags to pack out. The immediate area features a manicured, fenced lawn with picnic tables and a corral for horses near the barn. Recreation opportunities abound with the Alder Bench trailhead located just north on Forest Road 610. This historic 6.5-mile trail, once used by stockmen driving livestock to high country, offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and access to elk and deer hunting in designated winter range. Anglers can cast for trout in scenic Alder Creek, while the surrounding mixed conifer forests and aspen groves provide excellent wildlife viewing.

Directions

From South Fork, travel approximately 0.5 miles northwest on Highway 149 towards Creede. Alder Guard Station is on the left, less than 50 yards from Forest Road 610.
